Premises Licence

  • The sale by retail of alcohol;
  • The supply of alcohol by or on behalf of a club to, or to the order of, a member of the club;
  • The provision of regulated entertainment;
  • The provision of late night refreshment.

The Premises Licence Holder can be an individual, individuals or a company. They need not be either a Personal Licence holder or the Designated Premises Supervisor of the premises concerned.

The holder of the Premises Licence must ensure that the licence or a certified copy is kept at the premises by the licence holder or by a person whom the licence holder has nominated in writing, in which case a notice specifying the position held at the premises by the person nominated must be displayed at the premises.

The holder of the Premises Licence must ensure that the Premises Licence summary (or certified copy) is prominently displayed at the premises for inspection by the Police or an authorised person.

Every premises with the sale of alcohol as a licensable activity must have a current nominated Premises Supervisor registered with the appropriate Licensing Authority. This individual must be the holder of a Personal Licence and will be responsible for all licensable activities at the premises.

The Designated Premises Supervisor will normally the person with day to day responsibility of the licensed premises and will be the contact for the Licensing Authority, Police and other responsible authorities.

Only one Designated Premises Supervisor may be specified on a single premises licence.


Premises Licence Applications

The following are the different types of Premises Licence application:

  • Provisional Statement.
  • New Licence
  • Variation to Existing Licence

An application for a New Premises Licence must be made to the relevant Licensing Authority with copies to the police and all other responsible authorities.


An application must be accompanied by:

  • an Operating Schedule.
  • a plan of the premises
  • details of the relevant licensable activities
  • formal agreement of the person specified as the Designated Premises Supervisor

In addition, the application must be advertised by way of a public notice in a local newspaper and by prominent display at the premises in question.

Applications for a Provisional Statement, New Premises Licence and in certain circumstances, an application to Vary a Premises Licence require the submission of plans. The Licensing Authority fees for such applications are detailed on the page entitled Licensing Authority Fees.
